Overcoming False Expectations

April 12, 20242 min read

In our journeys, personal and professional, we often face an unseen challenge that quietly undermines our efforts and relationships: false expectations. These are the expectations we hold but do not voice, the assumptions we make without verification, and the silent hopes that lead to silent disappointments.

I recall a profound lesson from a mentor, David McCurley, who taught me about the dangers of these unspoken expectations. He described them as killers, which might sound dramatic until you realize the truth in his words. False expectations can kill opportunities, relationships, and even self-esteem, all because we assume rather than communicate.

Whether it's with colleagues, friends, or family, when we don't clearly express our expectations, we're setting the stage for potential failure. Not because we or others are necessarily at fault, but because we're operating on different wavelengths without even realizing it.

The good news is that once we're aware of these false expectations, we can take steps to address them. It's about fostering an environment where open communication is the norm, not the exception.

Practical Steps to Avoid False Expectations

  1. Express, Don't Assume: Always articulate your expectations. It's better to over-communicate than leave things unsaid.

  2. Invite Feedback: Encourage others to share their expectations with you. This reciprocal approach builds mutual understanding.

  3. Reality Check: Ensure your expectations are grounded in reality. If they're not, you're setting up for disappointment.

  4. Be Prepared to Pivot: Circumstances change, and so should your expectations. Adaptability is key to managing disappointments.

"Expectations were like fine pottery. The harder you held them, the more likely they were to crack."
- Brandon Sanderson

Holding expectations too tightly can lead to inevitable disappointment, much like how fine pottery shatters when gripped too firmly. A gentle and flexible approach to our hopes and anticipations allows them to evolve and adapt, preventing the fractures that occur when we hold onto our assumptions and desires with inflexible resolve.
